But He Never Guessed How Wrong.
A relaxing day of rock climbing takes a disturbing turn when Kayden McKenna's route brings her face-to-face with a dead climber. Is it a terrible accident or something darker? When the case is handed to overburdened sheriff Landon Grainger, he turns to Jake Westin for help. With Jake's past now revealed, he's ready to use his talent for investigation again--but he could never prepare for where the mystery will take him.
Kayden's climbing expertise soon leads her and Jake to the realization that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is onto them. When strange things begin happening in Yancey, Jake is terrified that once again his world may put someone he loves in danger. But the truth is far worse than he could ever imagine.
My review:
This is only the fourth book by this author, but she has hit it out of the ballpark with each book in this series, and this may be the best one yet. I may risk sounding like a soap opera addict when I say this, but Dani has been setting up a story about her character Jake from book one. A mysterious guy with a past no one knows about, until the last book when his past was revealed.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it, so I did read through it in one setting. I thought the crime they had set out to investigate was solved rather quickly, and found myself thinking there had to be a twist, and was there ever. I won't give away any spoilers, but just when you think things are solved and going to calm down, the action and suspense only intensifies. This is very likely the best suspense novel I have read this year, or close to it. I have read some really good ones. Dani started off well with her first book, and there was nothing at all lacking in it, but each book in this series seems better than the last one.
I am not a guy who likes a lot of romance in a book, and this one, as the others in the series, does have a lot, but it is tasteful and blended in with the suspense and action in a way that I found myself even cheering on those parts of the story. And perhaps the romantic elements of the story were more believable since the two main characters had had feelings for each other for some time, whereas in most books it is almost a love at first sight thing.
I loved the book, and was sad to see it end. It left me wanting more, and I was happy to find out there is one more book in this series coming, and I can't wait until it does. I highly recommend this series to mystery and suspense readers, but they should be read in order.
