Not Where You Should Be

My devotional book I am reading is covering the life of David right now. I found last night's devotional interesting, and thought I'd pass what it had to say on, in my own words. It was about when David committed adultery with Bathsheba, then had her husband killed to cover up his sin. The devotional pointed out that the problem started because David was not where he should have been. Instead of being out fighting the war, he was on his rooftop watching a beautiful woman bathe.

How often do we set ourselves up for temptation and/or sin by not being where we should be? For the young dating couple, alone in a house, hormones raging, the man in the parking lot of the adult bookstore, trying not to go in, the person lingering in front of the cigarettes he is trying to quit, the guy struggling to quit pornography alone in the house with the computer standing ready.

Temptation often comes no matter what we do, but I also believe that for many people, it comes because we are not where we should be. The devil doesn't need our help for him to set up temptation - he will see it finds us anywhere, but let's not help him out. We all need to guard our minds and hearts better, and try not to be in a situation where temptation is sure to come. Learn from David's mistake.
